Just as we support laboring women, we also support dads. And partners, and grandparents, and other loved ones too.
For a dad who wants to be intimately involved in his partner's labor, we serve as a source of ideas and encouragement, and as an extra set of experienced hands. Other dads prefer to have the doula assume the primary support role. Sometimes a dad is woman's main physical support and we provide more verbal reassurance. We're comfortable working with dads in all kinds of ways—sometimes we just figure it out together as the birth unfolds. Prenatal visits are a great time to talk about how both parents envision their birth experience.
A doula provides guidance, ideas and reassurance that can make labor a more positive experience for everyone involved. With our knowledge of birth and the medical system, we can often take some of the pressure off a dad so he can focus fully on supporting the woman he loves.
Dads and doulas are complementary during labor, not mutually exclusive. Each brings unique strengths and expertise to support the mother on her amazing, life-changing journey.
